On the list of events that are held in the city of San Antonio, Texas, Battle of Flowers Parade is among those few that are highly sought after. The Parade was held for the first time in 1891 to commemorate the fallen soldiers during the Battle of San Jacinto and also to celebrate the victory. The parade honors the valor and bravery of all the heroes, the deeds of whom shall never be forgotten, thanks to the events like Battle of Flowers Parade.

The Battle of Flowers Association was initially known as the Battle of Flowers Parade Committee. But later in 1914, the name of the committee was officially changed to the Battle of Flowers Association of San Antonio following the adaptation of the constitution and the grant of a seal and a charter. The main objective of the association was and still is to keep the good old traditions of the state of the Texas, alive in its original form. And also keep the patriotic traditions and spirit alive amongst all its citizens. The Battle of Flowers is the offspring of that oath, which is why is remains as the official trademark of the association today.

The Battle Of Flowers Parade initially took the form of an idea in the mind of Ellen Maury Slayden back in 1891. Ellen Maury Slayden was a wife of a Congressman, and she conceived the idea of the Parade after when she saw a parade of the similar sort back in Spain. And to further materialize her idea of the parade, she discussed the idea along with her friends. She was of the view that a Flower Parade should be held every year in San Antonio on 21st of April in order to commemorate the valor of the fallen heroes of the nation during the battle at Alamo.

The parade would not only honor the heroes but would also be a moment to celebrate the victory that was earned during the battle of San Jacinto back on April 21, 1836. It was that battle, which rendered Texas independent from the clutches of Mexico. As the idea of the parade passed around amongst the ladies and was subsequently liked by them as well. The Battle of Flowers Parade Committee was then founded by those few ladies, who then started to go after the support of the community leaders of that time so that the plans of the parade could move further ahead.

Following the successful application of the plans, the first ever flower parade took place which also featured an actual Flower Battle. The battle featured carriage, bicycles and floats covered in flowers and going around in opposite directions while tossing and throwing flowers at each other as they went pass each other. As the time passed and more and more people started to attend the event, it transformed into a weeklong celebration by 1895. The tradition of Selecting a Queen of the parade was started back in 1896, while the tradition of selecting a King followed in 1897. Royal Robes and Courts were introduced as a part of the tradition in 1900, while later in 1909 the selection of the Queens and Kings was handed over to the Order of Alamo.

The scale and attendance of the event grew even much more larger as the years passed by, and by 1916 floats were no longer decorated by fresh flower instead they were decorated with artificial ones. The tradition of wearing yellow dresses and yellow by the association members was also started in 1976. 1991 marked the centennial anniversary celebrations of the parade, and all the previous presidents of the association were called upon to through flowers at each and the spectators to revive the memories of the first parade that was held a hundred years back. Even after all those years, Battle of Flowers Parade is attended and enjoyed by thousands of Texans every year to celebrate their independence from Mexico. And if you want to be the part of the spectacle this year, it is recommended that you grab your Battle of Flowers Parade tickets before the stock runs out.
