The Canon Theatre
Originally opened in 1920, The Canon Theatre emerged as both live performances venue and a movie house. At the time of it’s opening, the Canon Theatre was the largest in Canada with seating for over 3,000 people. With its opulent design by the great architect Thomas Lamb, the theater was one of the classiest of its times.
Operating under the Pantages name which was one of the largest vaudeville and motion picture theatre circuits in North America, the theatre drew large crowds and featured the latest in vaudeville and first run cinema. However, the theater’s fortunes sank in 1929 because its owner was embroiled in a legal battle. RKO Pictures bought the Pantages, renamed it the Imperial, and used it exclusively as a movie house. Management and control were resumed by Famous Players, which retained ownership for more than 50 years. In 1973, the Imperial was divided into six separate cinemas to become The Imperial Six.
After some legal wrangles in the 80’s it came under the operations of Livent Production Company, a division of Cineplex Odeon. The theater got a massive renovation by Livent which rebuilt it as a live theatre, restoring the lobby areas to the original 1920 design. Livent also brought back its original name, and the new 2,250-seat Pantages Theatre was home for many years to the lavish Andrew Lloyd Webber show The Phantom of the Opera.
Livent operated the Pantages until 1999, when it collapsed due to bankruptcy and the theatre was purchased by Live Nation then known as Clear Channel Entertainment and renamed The Canon Theater in 2001. Currently the theater is managed by Mirvish Productions, owner of Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre and Royal Alexandra Theatre. Today the Canon Theatre with its seating capacity of 2,295 is an important, historic and beautiful showplace in Toronto and is still going strong with lots of new performances and quality productions.
